The Negative Calorie Food Myth
Many diet guides and gurus like to talk about negative calorie foods. The idea being that these foods actually burn more calories in consumption than they put into the body, and so eating them will help you lose weight. It is a popular idea amongst many who try to sell diet books and products.
But it is not accurate. Many of these books push the idea of certain foods being great for weight loss - such as celery. But celery only burns something like 10% of the calories it brings to the body. What many people forget is that the body is one of the most efficient mechanisms going and its conversion of calories to energy is done very well. Throughout evolution our lives depended on it.
What low calorie foods can do
Now that is not to say that the foods suggested by the 'negative calorie food' experts aren't useful for weight loss, indeed they can be a powerful tool for those looking to lose weight. But you shouldn't expect them to burn calories for you. If you are looking to increase the rate that you burn calories you need to look to exercise to both use them as energy and increase the body's metabolism.
So what can these low calorie foods do? They take up important stomach space. What we mean by that is that they are, in the main, low calorie (though not negative). And so, as such, they give you a 'full feeling' without giving you many calories.
Beware though, this isn't always a good thing. The body needs certain amounts of calories to power its functions and whilst eating less calories will reduce the amount turned to fat and instead use fat calories passed a certain point it becomes a negative, not positive.
The 'starvation' effect is well known amongst dieters. It is where the body starts to burn less calories to perform every day functions, instead leaving the person tired and lacking in energy. The reason for this is that the body reacts to limited calories by slowing down all its functions and preserving what calories it does have for later use in case it is starved even more - so will store calories as fat.
The important factor here is to know where this point is and to look at increasing your metabolism. The metabolism is what decides how many calories get burned performing every day functions, by increasing the metabolism you then burn more calories.
So low calorie foods that increase the metabolism are what you need to be looking for, rather than mythical low calorie foods. Especially look for foods that are high in protein and ideally, have a spicy kick as spices are great for increasing the body's metabolism.
It is important that you take on board the idea that there are no negative calorie foods. Whilst people may make these claims they have never managed to back it up with scientific fact and research. Never take the word of people trying to sell you a diet book or product, do your own research and understand what is and isn't true.

So you have an extra 500 cals that your body doesn't need and have tried various calorie diets and haven't been able to burn up as many calories as you want to. You want your body to maintain their body mass in 2000 and not in 2500 calories. But you should note that even though the body has lost some of its lean muscle, their metabolic engine has decreased. So you might reach your goal as a person but what will happen when you return to eating normally. Your body will break down protein and your lean muscle which you need just to satisfy your body's needs. Your body will literally, and I mean literally, begin to eat itself to stay alive. The reason why people lose weight on fad diets is because of the low calorie intake.
This is turn will decrease your metabolic rate more which you don't want to do. Also, by doing cardiovascular exercise you will lose weight as well. The more lean muscle you have the more your body will burn calories at rest. Lean muscle burns up a lot of calories so take up some light weight bearing activities to build up lean muscles. You can increase your metabolic rate by taking up exercise but again what will happen when you give up exercise?
According to this theory, for example, if you eat 100 calories of a food that requires 150 calories to digest, then you've burnt an additional 50 calories simply by eating that food. One idea is that added enzymes, both from processing vegetables and fruits and inherent in the vegetables themselves, helped accelerate all the chemical reactions in the body, resulting in a net gain of 250 calories which is added to our body fat. Study shows heart patients eating a vegetarian diet with mostly fruits and vegetables, with NO prescribed exercise program and NO decrease in either caloric intake or a reduction in serving sizes, lost an average of 20 pounds each. How about a diet primarily consisting of fruits and vegetables?
The Negative Calorie Diet can make it happen for you. Just think about it, as you are completely eliminating 2 of the 3 main food sources.
With hundreds of diet and weight loss products on the market, we know it can be extremely difficult to decide which one is the best for you. All of them may sound promising, unfortunately the majority of them do not live up to their claims.
